2nd floor: DJ Kid Capri – A Hip Hop/Jazz Party
Jazz and Hip Hop…The two genres have been connected since the birth of rap and DJ culture. Turntable scientists took samples of jazz instrumentals, looped, split, and sampled music treasures to birth some of the most recognizable hip hop beats. Jazz musicians like Bob James, Ronnie Foster, and Ron Carter created the basslines and instrumentation that are the foundation for classic hip hop anthems. DJ Kid Capri, as Artist-in-Residence, will honor the deep connection with his highly anticipated DJ set at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival. With his decades of work as an architect of Hip Hop, he will create a soundtrack that blends the two genres that we can enjoy on the dance floor at the August Wilson Center.
Born David Anthony Love in Brooklyn, raised in the Bronx, Kid Capri was born to be creative and ambitious. As a young child he was scaling his family’s old Zenith stereo system in the attempt to scratch records before he was even ten years old. Kid first inched his way onto the hip-hop scene with the grass-roots approach of club gigs and creating mixtapes. Kid is the original guru of mixtapes, as he saw their profit potential early in his career, he paved the way and other DJ’S followed.
Kid Capri is known for his longtime DJ role on “Def Comedy Jam!” He has produced on various soundtracks for film, music, television, and has done several music projects. Kid has completed 2 classic albums, with a third on the way called “TOP TIER” Kid.
DJ Kid Capri is a 2026 Joyce & George Wein Foundation Artist-in-Residence.
